Is Your Career Social?

So, do you have any online social network accounts? Adults who don’t have a social network account - e.g., LinkedIn, Facebook or even Twitter - might be doing themselves a huge disfavor careerwise. In the midst of this recession, many people are out of work, with many more concerned that they’ll be laid off.
While there are mixed opinions about whether job sites are really the way to find work for most careers, at least many job seekers seem to agree that referrals from friends and colleagues tends to be a sure way to finding work. So the wider your network, the better your chances of finding a new job. Even if you’re employed, you can stay on top of the job market.
In addition to networking, and whether or not you’re looking for work, there are ways to stand out in a recession - things you can do to shore up your job seeking approach and your attitude to career. Or you could always work for yourself - be a freelancer, contractor and an all-around entrepreneur/ webpreneur.

Short answer: yes. I'm doing it. So are others. The hard part is, it takes time. I took me nearly a year because I didn't know about real opportunities. So, in the spirit of this site, I'll teach you what I know + what I learn along the way. For free. No tricks. But if you're not serious, find something else to do. Because patience and knowledge makes a difference. Note: This is not another "internet marketing" site. It's about actual opportunities, what they are, and how to find them. Yes, marketing yourself online will be a part of the process, but it's not about selling software to people to teach them to sell software. Get my meaning?

Great resource. I have recommended your blog to my seminar delegates for more (on-going) information.

Using social networking can be a great way to network and even find a job but you do need to be careful. if your personal facebook page is filled with inappropriate pictures and comments (ie: Woa, got so drunk last night) It is probably not something you would want business contacts to see.Make 2 profiles, 1 that is “all business” and 1 for fun.

Melanie, actually that’s not necessary anymore. Facebook now not only lets you partition your “friends” into multiple lists, you can control which person or list sees what content from your profile, albums, wall, etc.

Raj,
You are quite right, and hopefully some people read your comment as well as your post. I have a client who linked her business blog to a very inappropriate personal Facebook page and she still has not changed it by using these privacy settings.

You’re right Raj,
At times of recession its important to be both creative and recursive when it comes to finding a job, freelance is definitely an option and it has shown to be an important tool for getting some extra money. Don’t underestimate the power of social networks!
